An Obstruction Recognition System for Low-vision by LiDAR Scanner

Kouki SHIBATA, Akio MARUYAMA, Masakazu ARAKAWA

In Japan, there are more than 300,000 visually impaired people. They are always in danger when they walk, because of their disability. There is a risk of hitting an obstacle, tripping over a step, or falling down stairs or station platforms. Therefore, we have developed a system that detects and displays forward obstacles and road surface unevenness on Apple's iPhone12 Pro smartphone. The iPhone12 Pro is equipped with a LiDAR scanner, which is used to detect obstacles.@The obstacle detection results are superimposed on the camera image displayed on the terminal display and displayed in four colors. We conducted operation experiments and subject evaluations, confirmed that the device could be an effective support device for people with low vision.
