As a communication support tool for severely physically handicapped persons, researches on eye gaze human-computer interfaces have been active. However, since eye gaze interfaces using electrooculography (EOG) are poor in accuracy and often cause incorrect input, their performance is still not sufficient for practical use. This paper presents a high performance interface using EOG by combining high accuracy identification of eye movements and fast-switching performance of voluntary eye blink. Furthermore, most of the previous studies measure horizontal eye movements and voluntary eye blink by using 2 couples of electrodes arranged vertically and horizontally around the patients' eye. However, using 2 couples of electrodes is considered causing strain to the patients. The proposed interface decreases strain on the patients by using only 1 couple of electrodes which identify the horizontal movements and voluntary eye blink. Comparing our interface to the cur-rent one, the error rate was decrease by 1/2 times and input speed was increased by 21.6%. Nevertheless, the same performance was also obtained when using 1 couple of electrodes.
